Platform Wedge Shoes & Cork Wedge Shoes for the Funky Diva

Some women collect ceramic cats or cookie jars, others collect pants or skirts. Some even collect shoes, but I have two specific loves: the wedge and the platform shoe. When those two combine, the platform wedge shoe, I can nearly have heart palpitations. I just love a platform shoe. What I love about the wedge is that I get the little extra height and that lean leggy look from the slight wedge. It just pushes the heel up ever so slightly (about an inch, like a pump) which pushes that muscle in the back of the leg out just a teensy bit. Enough to get noticed and quite a few whistles.
The magnificence of the platform wedge shoe can't be denied. I'm really not sure why more women don't wear them. They're very comfortable, and you get the height without the wobble (you know the wobble? Where walking feels like you're about to teeter over from the stiletto your balancing precariously upon) I can't imagine what genius came up with the stiletto and couldn't think of the platform at the same time. Or, even easier, think of the wedge shoe. I want to believe it's a man, but considering how good high heels look on a woman, I can't believe it's all men's fault (even though I'd like to.) I think I lost my point somewhere back there. The point is the platform wedge offers all the looks of the stiletto, but all the support of a flat or pump. The fact that the wedge has support under the arch makes it very comfortable and easy to walk in. What makes the platform wedge so perfect is that it has support under the heel, toe and arch.
Wedge shoes have thousands of heel types, cork being the most popular. There are some spectacular cork wedge platform shoes. I actually love the new ones from Fergie and Jessica Simpson. It must take a star to realize the fun in funky. I love the look and, more importantly, the feel of the cork wedge. It has some really great qualities, not the least of which is they look freakin awesome.

Wedge Sneakers So Very Sexy

If I had a million dollars, I'd have a pair of wedge shoes in every color and style possible. At the moment I actually have quite a few pairs, including a number of wedge sneakers. It seems there are a lot of negative thoughts about the wedge sneaker, but they are quite gorgeous. Take Victoria Beckham's, for instance, she wore a pair of them to throw the pitch at the Dodgers game, and I have been getting compliments on mine ever since.
Sneakers in general aren't the most flattering shoes for all ages. While it can be really cute on teenagers, no matter what they wear, the same shoes won't look great on a 40 year old. There are some cute wedge sneakers that can be worn by anyone at any age, as Victoria proved.
The wedge sneaker looks great with jeans, shorts and even some skirts. Jean skirts are the best types to wear with a great wedge sneaker. If you're going to wear a pair of sneakers with a jean skirt, they should be a wedge. Not only does the wedge raise you in height, they'll make your legs look amazing, like if you're wearing stilettos (only more comfortable). It's a great look which I encourage everyone to wear.

Platform Wedge Shoes Say Funky and Fresh

The platform wedge shoe offers more than just regular funky styles of wedge shoes, it adds balance and comfort. Platforms from sandals to boots are available from designer brands and budget friendly brands everywhere.
There's a reason I'm so crazy about platform shoes, and in particular platform wedges. Well, firstly, I'm not very tall, and I really love being tall. When I wear a platform shoe, I get a lot of taller of course, but I also get a lot of comments on my shoes. So, attention is another reason I like that form of shoe. But I can get attention from wearing any type of sassy shoe, so it's not really that. What makes a platform shoes so special is that I get all the height that I want, with all the attention and none of the discomfort of a stiletto heel. Platform wedge shoes are even more comfortable and stable than a regular stiletto platform.
A basic platform shoe has a heel that is equal to or nearly equal to a raised platform under the ball of the foot. The basic premise behind a platform shoe was originally to make wearing high heel easier. There isn't much strain or balance problems, when wearing a platform that is nearly equal to a heel. In the 70s and 90s, the platform heel became more of a trendy style shoe, and while to some extent that's true now, for the most part platform shoes are a mainstay.
The platform wedge shoe adds a significant difference in balance and strain over both regular platforms and stiletto heels. The wench platform starts at the heel, and supports the entire foot. The full support in heel, instep and the ball of the foot creates a very stable shoot a walk in, and even better it is extremely comfortable.
There are literally hundreds of different types of wedge heels, and platform styles. There's wood platform wedge heels, and cork wedge heels, plastic and leather covered wood heels available in just about every color and style as well is made by all kinds of famous fashion designers.
What I love about my platform wedges is that they fit in so many situations. I can wear my sexy white platform wedge sandals out shopping, and throw a special dress on and wear them to a dinner date.
My platform wedge boots are a little funky to wear for formal occasions, but I love getting compliments on them when I wear them to work or during the winter just walking around.
People often stop me and ask where I got my shoes, or boots, and, unfortunately, when I bought my shoes, they were just trendy shoes I found in specialty shops. It used to be harder to say where I got them. I bought many of mine at a little store in Capital Hill Denver area called Fashion Nation. A small boutique shop that specialized in funky wear and always had the cutest fashionable platform shoes. But today the same boots and shoes are sold everywhere. Heck even Dolce and Gabbana, Dior, Gucci and Luis Vuitton have incredibly cute and sexy platform shoes for sale. There is no shortage of places to buy cute platform wedge shoes.

Brands and Styles of the Womens Wedge Shoes

Wedge shoes are all about glamor and style. Find brand name wedges and designer wedges in various colors and styles. From casual to formal, there is the perfect wedge for every occasion.
As I mention on my home page, Ferragamo studied anatomy so he could design a the perfect shoe. The wedge shoe came out of that research. So when you slip on those slinky wedge sandals, your foot is cradled beautifully.
I'm a gal that loves glamor. Considering what the wedge shoe represent, I think they are the perfect shoe for my closet. Ferragamo had it right when he built his empire on Hollywood shoes. When you think Ferragamo you think of his invention: the wedge shoe. And you cant think of Ferragamo without glamor. After all he's the designer that hand made shoes for the starts of the 30s, 40s and 50s. He's also the only shoe maker to have an entire museum dedicated to his shoes. There are other shoe museums, of course, but they all feature numerous designers. Mr. Ferragamo has one all to his self. There is a reason for that, his shoes are amazing, and his invention is astounding.
Womens Wedge Shoe Styles
If you're really looking for glamor, there are some wicked sandal wedges with rhinestones along the bands that can really make your feet feel sexy and sassy. Contrary to what some people think, a beaded shoe isn't necessarily an evening only shoe. It is possible to wear a great set of beaded or rhinestone shoes with a pair of jeans. Mostly it's a sandal with split toe style, however, occasionally you can wear a peep toe wedge designed with rhinestones or other embellishments, with casual slacks or jeans. It really all depends on the shoe.
More interested in a basic casual wedge? I would choose a closed toe wedge for a universal style. A closed toe means height and style, but also it means year round usability. Most of the closed toe wedges are going to be casual, but, thank goodness for the Internet, you can find styles of formal close toe styles too. A classy closed toe wedge goes with work and play. There are some formal shoes I've included a link or two here, that really look nice with party dresses or cocktail dresses.
If you're looking for funk and style, go for a platform wedge. Perfect with jeans, or skirt, a platform heel can really spice up your outfit. Most platform shoes don't go well with formal dresses, especially wedge styles, but the new Gucci and Dior ones are oo la la pretty and belong with a sexy cocktail dress.
Peep toe wedges are come in a mix of casual and dressy. While they're generally conservative, we have the Internet to thank (once again) for a selection of cute and quirky wedge shoes.
Price Ranges
For great wedge heels that don't cost an arm and a leg, and are casual, brands like Crocs, Steve Madden and Clarks are the way to go. Steve Madden has some awesome shoes for women that are really pretty. I found this one pair that reminded me of the frilly number that Carrie bought when she went “hello lover” to the shoes in the window. They aren't pink, but they are that same ruffled look (only taller and multicolored, or black).

Wedge Sandals For A Delicate Look

When looking for wedge sandals, there are many styles and brand names to decide from. Ferragamo, Luis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior and many other designer brands have fantastic wedge style shoes. There are also lower cost brands like Bandalino, Hush Puppies, and Betsy Johnson. The point is that if you want a specific type of shoe, it's available at any price.
When Salvatore Ferragamo invented the wedge shoe I'm sure the current versions would have met his standards of style. Wedges today are incredibly popular and have so many designs that they can be worn to just about any occasion. Anyone that thinks the wedge shoe is just a casual shoe hasn't researched the style enough times.
Sandals in summer are not just comfortable, they're a traditional. Other than traditional, sandals are beautiful and make the feet look tremendously sexy. The wedge sandal is a particularly gorgeous style that can be worn over and over again. As you can see, I've worn my wedges so many times they practically jump out of the closet when I come near it. They're perfect for anything I wear, from dresses to pants, and even shorts. They make me feel sexy and feminine... and very very tall.
If you're looking for a wedge, there are a few things to think about. Some heels can make it more difficult to walk in, others are too casual for formal occasions, while some are too formal for casual times. If price is a factor, there are low cost brands that make a good shoe, and there are low cost brands that make uncomfortable and flimsy shoes. If you choose the wrong one, you'll end up with soles blister, heels that break off easily and basically unwearable shoes.
For comfort, I will always recommend leather, suede, cloth/canvas tops. Leather and suede mold to the shape of the foot and can actually get more comfortable over time. While a leather or suede wedge sandal will work in casual or formal occasions (depending on the design and heel style), most canvas shoes will not. The only cloth wedge sandal which works for formal occasions is the satin shoe, which is perfect for weddings.
Formal wedge shoes come in a variety of choices. There are embroidered, leather, designer, white, black, gold and platforms. Really when choosing a wedge shoe for a formal occasion, follow the same guidelines you would for any shoe. You'll read a lot about how wedges are casual shoes, but again I say it just isn't so.
What to avoid when shopping for semi-formal, formal, black tie and white tie
- Any wedge heel that visually is wood or cork.
- Canvas wedges or espadrille styles.
- Platforms are fine for formal, semi-formal and some are even OK for black tie, however, you should be careful about platform style shoes when attending a white tie event (a ball type special event). They can appear informal.
- Shoes that are too high can be very uncomfortable, be sure to find a basic heel, two inches to 3 inches is perfect for any affair.
- Vinyl shoes can cause a lot of foot problems including blisters, cuts and a rash from rubbing. Because they have no give, they don't adjust to the foot. What that means is that for shopping or just hanging out they might be OK, but for a formal setting, you don't want to end up hobbling around in your ball gown.
- For casual shoes, there are a lot more choices. If you are an avid watcher of Sex and the City (like me), you'll remember that they wore their shoes everywhere. While casual shoes can't be worn to formal affairs, shoes that you buy for formal affairs can often be worn casually.
Some of my favorite sandals are ones I can wear with anything. I find that the colors black, gold, white work best for me. For styles I love a great platform (mainly because I don't walk so well when I don't have that extra balance), but I have a few basic wedges.
The black wedge sandal is great for summer, spring and fall. One of the unique factors about the color black is that it survives through all seasons. A sandal, however, don't. It probably is best to avoid wearing sandals during the winter, unless it's to a formal event. Oddly enough the more formal, the more leeway when it comes to black wedge sandals and sandals in general. There are some perfect black wedges for formal and black tie affairs. Simply yummy shoes in general. For just shopping or a dinner date, try a closed toe instead.

White wedge sandals are great for anyone that has darker skin, us pale girls usually have to add some tanning spray first. It's not a very attractive color for women with milky white skin, unless there are embellishments like rhinestones. Unfortunately, a white sandal just emphasizes the paleness of the skin and doesn't flatter the leg. If you have lighter skin, try an off white or cream color, unless you have on pantyhose or tanning spray. (or really pink feet like me haha)
Gold wedge sandals used to remind me of the 70s weird disco shoes, but recently as I've come across designer brands, I've found the most sensational gold sandal wedges. They are sexy, sleek and so fun and flirty.
The best sandals are always the platform wedge sandals. So much drool just accumulated in my mouth now that I will have to devote a whole page to platforms. Suffice to say I love them (and you can tell by my many many platform boots and platform heels). If you wanna add funk and style to your shoe, try the platform wedges.
