Normally, I'd be waxing poetic about this shoe or that heel, but today, I'm just going to straight shoot with you here. Don't put on your bullet proof vests just yet, however! I've still got some poetic licensing to fulfill – especially when it comes to shoes.

It's no secret to anyone that I love shoes. I have a whole site built upon my love for shoes, after all. It's probably no secret that I love wedge shoes as well, or mostly platforms. Check out the homepage and you'll see a veritable shrine to two of the wedge platform shoes that I own. I have many more than just those as well. What I can tell you about wedge platform shoes, is that you get all of the height and none of the discomfort of a regular platform. They're also far less wobbly. And someone as clumsy as myself needs all the wobbly help she can get. So without further ado (I've made too much ado about nothing so far), I present my picks for the best black wedge platform shoes.

The easiest place to start is with the most casual of shoes: black wedge platform sneakers.

Okay, to be completely honest, I chose these particular shoes, and platform sneakers specifically, because these are my favorite shoes of all time. They aren't particularly superb, I just find them awesome. They're not real leather, which is a down fall for everyone except vegans and animal rights activists. The sole is rubber, like almost every sneaker, but the higher heel means two things : one, you're not jogging in these puppies and two, total comfort. I mean utter sheer complete walking-on-air comfort. So, if you're looking for a sneaker that's got a wedge heel, comes in black and will look sexy and smart, Skechers Bon Ton Lights of Fire is the one for you.

They're high, don't mistake them by their picture. These shoes will add a lot of height, allowing you to wear some longer jeans (hi, can we say LONG legs faked! Woohoo) People have some good things to say about them, and they're the best selling shoe I have on this site. I've featured it in different posts and everyone who has bought one has been pleased. What I hear is that they're a little narrow, so go up a half-size, if you can. Another thing is, they aren't like normal sneakers, you can't just put them on and expect miraculous comfort. These are fashion sneakers, and like all good fashionable shoes, they need to be broken in. They're sexy and sassy and perfect for clubbing with jeans or just hanging around with friends. What I love most about them is that they make my foot look slim. Yes, I'm weird, I've accepted it.
So that's fashion sneakers, now let's go into a walking sneaker. I only have one word for you: Skechers. And which style do I recommend?

The best brand of black platform wedge sneaker for walking is Skechers Women's Shape Ups - Strength Fitness Walking Sneaker (Skechers Women's Shape Ups - Strength Fitness Walking Sneaker) I'm not talking a day out shopping with the gals, no this shoe is for serious walkers. It has a heel that rolls properly from heel to toe as you move, working all the right muscles. And it keeps your weight centered instead of either toe or heel – making it really comfortable. This shoe is built to improve your muscles while you walk, whether that's to the mall or actual exercising your legs.

According to Skecher's advertising the Shape Ups are designed specifically to build muscle and improve your posture as well as reduce stress on knee and ankle joints. The fact that the shoes are extremely cute and have a nice tall heel is a bonus.

These are not magic shoes! I can't stress this enough. They aren't for running or hiking etcetera. They are for walking. Your butt isn't going to magically disappear after a week of wear, you won't get the calves of a trained dancer. What they will do is force you to walk a certain way to work specific muscles and cushion you feet. Read the reviews and decide for yourself. Personally, I love them.

Black Platform Casual Wedge Shoes

Let's talk about black platform wedge casual shoes. The shoes you wear every day or that just go with everything. Shoes that you don't have to think about if they go with this or that. You get up, you put your jeans or shorts or culottes (please don't, not the culottes, for the love of everything good and holy – not culottes) on and then grab the shoes you /know/ work well with them.

While sneakers have always been an easy choice for casual wear, many of us prefer a more versatile shoe – something one can wear with jeans, a summer dress, a suit or whatever else.

One of the most difficult things you'll ever do is try to find a dressy black wedge for an evening gown or a sparkling cocktail gown. It's not impossible, but it's freaking hard. Combine that with a “platform” shoe and it's an all out war with designers. The shoes I picked out took hours of research and there still isn't an exactly perfect shoe for an evening gown that's both a wedge and a platform. I've put the best that I can find below. I hope one of them works for you.

oh DEER! Women's Valley Wedge A black patent high heel shoe with a sweet little bow at the top. It's not gaudy at all and the heel is high enough to make your nose bleed. The heel makes it a little impossible to wear with an evening gown or cocktail dress, but imagine how lovely it would be with a suit, jeans or a little black dress for a date.

The next and only shoe that makes my heart go pitter patter is this little number from Bebe :
Bebe Women's Solaris Platform Sandal A four and half inch heel with a one and half inch platform, it's fantastic. The best part is, for me anyway, is if looked at from afar, the strappy part looks like satin.

Black wedges are one of the hottest shoes on the market today. They're sexy, comfortable and they look really great on the foot. They're conventional enough for a professional office and formal enough to wear with most evening dresses. When pairing a pair of black wedges with that perfect little black dress, it's important to distinguish them. A simple, yet elegant, dress needs a shoe with a little oomph. What I've done in this post is put together some really cute shoes that work well all year round (except the boots), but are super terrific in fall, winter and early spring (when the snow and cold still abound). So why black when there are so many other colors to brighten up the gloom of winter? Well firstly, I don't think winter is very gloomy. There is a lot of gray, sure, but there's also white. The elegance of white and black together is indisputable. It's a natural contrast for every woman that wishes to wear an elegant shoe color, that's also versatile. So black is the perfect contrast is one great reason to showcase only black shoes in one post. The other reason I chose black is because it goes with nearly everything. There is very little black clashes with; navy blue is all that really comes to my mind. It looks better with some colors; white and red to name two, but it also looks good with nearly every other color in your closet. The last reason is that women love black. We do, let's face it. Black is that one pair of shoes that we can always throw on quickly if we're in doubt, or a hurry.

When it comes to winter shoes, there are a lot of choices. Flats, pumps, platforms and boots all abound in a lot of styles, but a pair of black wedge shoes will set you apart, especially a pair of black winter wedge shoes.

Wedge sandals for example, took the fashion scene by storm only a few years ago. We still see the Espadrille style wedge paired with flowered dresses or jean shorts in the Summer even now. Now onto the important part of this post; finding the shoes under $35. There are a number of places you can buy merchandise at really low cost.

1) Amazon.com (who offer free shipping and many different merchants)

2) Ebay.com who offer merchants with free shipping and some without, but more importantly offer a lot more variety for $35, including some pre-worn merchandise. Hey don't knock the used gear ladies, you're saving money and the environment!

Now why are those places so great? Well they have one thing in common. Mass amounts of shoes and all are online. Stores that are online have no storefront overhead. That means no sales staff, no monthly rent on both a store and warehouse, no decorations, no lighting and so on. So those prices don't get marked up 200% like a department store. Another thing, online stores have lots and lots and lots of visible competition. If you go to buy a shoe, you can find that shoe 100 places and, if you're not lazy, at the touch of a "next" link you can find the one offered for lowest price. So those places have to stay competitive. Is it all roses and cheap wedge shoes? Nope. There are downsides to shopping online.

Shipping for one. If some places offer free shipping, they may charge handling. Be wary of that pair of black wedge sandals you just bought, the price jumped 20% when you pressed "checkout" because of tacked on charges. Even if they charge no handling, the shipping costs may raise the price. Now suddenly, instead of a pair of $35 shoes, you just bought a pair of $50 shoes. Meanwhile the place that charges shipping would have totaled out at like $40.

Another thing about online shops is returns. While almost every place has a return policy, guess who pays the shipping back to the vendor? Yup, that's you.

So be sure to take that into consideration when ordering.

Now, this shoe isn't exactly under $35, but it is available for $34.98 in some of the styles, so technically it counts. But it is such a fantastic shoe, I'm including it, even if the black is more expensive.
Every customer review of this shoe says it is comfortable, despite being 5" wedge heel! That is something to consider.

Ok this shoe is just cute cute cute. There are limited sizes, which unfortunately is one of the products of being a popular shoe. They run out of most of the sizes and then put it up for sale on Amazon. That is how Amazon works. Great for people that wear the size 9s this wedge sandal comes in, bad for those of us size 8.5 =-(. This shoe is whopping $13 at max price on Amazon.com. Worth every penny even if there aren't any customer reviews.

This shoe is just a basic cork wedge sandal that looks really great with sundresses and jeans alike. There aren't many shoes that go with everything like a cork wedge. This particular style is even great to wear with a dress to a wedding (as long as the dress isn't formal). A little silk sundress or semi-formal dress would pair great with these.
I'm a lover of ankle wraps too, so that's another reason to feature these little lovelies.

Case in point: One of the sites I buy my shoes on is Shoebuy.com . There are a particularly fantastic pair of black wedge sandals that i was hoping to buy on their site. Now clearly, I'm someone that loves shoes, but I'm also someone that can read proficiently. The greatest thing about Shoebuy.com is that they have this thing called customer reviews. Now when the company itself has a big statement that says the shoe runs small in width, and when I read the first 6 reviews that say the shoe fits small, narrow, I'm smart enough to either skip this shoe or order it in a bigger size, if possible. I won't, however, order my exact size and expect a different result than the company and other buyers have got. It's just common sense when you're shopping online, read the reviews, read the fits and if you're unsure about it, make sure you understand the return policy of the website. And, maybe you'll feel its unnecessary but it's not, write a review of your own and tell other customers of your experience.

Now if you're looking for some great shoe buys, there are really great offers all over the Internet. For me, spending a lot on a pair of shoes isn't a deal breaker. I mean if I see a pair of shoes for $300 I won't automatically turn my nose up at them. However, if I see a pair of shoes for $5 I know a couple of things off the bat:

1) the shoe is probably not leather
2) if it is leather it is probably stolen
3) if it's leather and not stolen it's probably used
4) All of the above

Now I'm ok with 1 and 3, but I'm not ok with 2. I won't buy stolen shoes, because it encourages more theft. You'll find a lot of these markets on EBay and at local flea markets. If a shoe is too cheap, count on one of those things. Too cheap means like $5 or $10, not like $20+. Some shoes, even leather ones, are available for pretty low prices. You won't find many brand names at that price, but stores like Payless carry low cost leather shoes. They probably aren't well made though. =(

If you want to find a good pair of shoes, you need to really focus on a few things:
1) Buy shoes made of real fabrics : leather, satin, suede, (*cough* alligator) etc. Now I realize there are those of us that are against wearing leather, heck I used to be one of you, but I don't care what anyone says, they aren't good for your feet. Leather is great for one reason: It form fits to your foot, and it lasts. That being said, you can find black wedge shoes in cotton, hemp and other PETA friendly materials.
2) Buy shoes that have been tested by consumers and that have their recommendation. Any old store can tell you how good their shoe fits, read what the consumers have to say, instead! There are plenty of shops that have the customer ratings (shoebuy is one of those shops).
3) Test the shoe out for a period of time. The sad fact is that a comfortable shoe in the shop, can turn mighty uncomfortable when you bring it home. I once bought a pair of sandals that were like walking on air, after about 15 minutes of real wear, the shoe began making this soft squishy sound. ugh. Be wary of hollow rubber soles.

It may be difficult to choose from a black, white, red or gold shoe. Even more difficult: finding a wedge shoe that fits perfectly. The problem is that most wedges used to be espadrilles or casual shoes, but all that changed with the web.

So while black shoes go with nearly everything, white wedges go with everything. In that case why buy black at all? Well, for one thing white is not the best color for every season. While social norms are changing, and white is becoming more common during the fall, it still is a good idea to stick with off whites for winter.(unless you're getting married). There are exceptions, like white wedge boots.

Why choose a White Wedge Shoe?

I look at my closet and almost always I go for my white shoes.(I'll reference those white wedge sandals again here and say they are so easy to wear). I pick white because it goes with everything and it's bright. Of course there are other bright colors, red, orange etc, but how many of those can be worn with anything in your closet? With a pair of white wedge sandals, you can feel a little lighter, brighter.

What works best? Having both a black and white pair of shoes.

When Salvatore Ferragamo invented the wedge shoe I'm sure the current versions would have met his standards of style. Wedges today are incredibly popular and have so many designs that they can be worn to just about any occasion. For comfort, I will always recommend leather, suede, cloth/canvas tops. Leather and suede mold to the shape of the foot and can actually get more comfortable over time. While a leather or suede wedge sandal will work in casual or formal occasions (depending on the design and heel style), most canvas shoes will not. The only cloth wedge sandal which works for formal occasions is the satin shoe, which is perfect for weddings.

Formal wedge shoes come in a variety of choices. There are embroidered, leather, designer, white, black, gold and platforms. Really when choosing a wedge shoe for a formal occasion, follow the same guidelines you would for any shoe. You'll read a lot about how wedges are casual shoes, but again I say it just isn't so.

What to avoid when shopping for semi-formal, formal, black tie and white tie

• Any wedge heel that visually is wood or cork.

• Canvas wedges or espadrille styles.

• Platforms are fine for formal, semi-formal and some are even OK for black tie, however, you should be careful about platform style shoes when attending a white tie event (a ball type special event). They can appear informal.
• Shoes that are too high can be very uncomfortable, be sure to find a basic heel, two inches to 3 inches is perfect for any affair.

• Vinyl shoes can cause a lot of foot problems including blisters, cuts and a rash from rubbing. Because they have no give, they don't adjust to the foot. What that means is that for shopping or just hanging out they might be OK, but for a formal setting, you don't want to end up hobbling around in your ball gown.

• For casual shoes, there are a lot more choices. If you are an avid watcher of Sex and the City (like me), you'll remember that they wore their shoes everywhere. While casual shoes can't be worn to formal affairs, shoes that you buy for formal affairs can often be worn casually.

Some of my favorite sandals are ones I can wear with anything. I find that the colors black, gold, white work best for me. For styles I love a great platform (mainly because I don't walk so well when I don't have that extra balance), but I have a few basic wedges.

The black wedge sandal is great for summer, spring and fall. One of the unique factors about the color black is that it survives through all seasons. A sandal, however, don't. It probably is best to avoid wearing sandals during the winter, unless it's to a formal event. Oddly enough the more formal, the more leeway when it comes to black wedge sandals and sandals in general. There are some perfect black wedges for formal and black tie affairs. Simply yummy shoes in general. For just shopping or a dinner date, try a closed toe instead.

White wedge sandals are great for anyone that has darker skin, us pale girls usually have to add some tanning spray first. It's not a very attractive color for women with milky white skin, unless there are embellishments like rhinestones. Unfortunately, a white sandal just emphasizes the paleness of the skin and doesn't flatter the leg. If you have lighter skin, try an off white or cream color, unless you have on pantyhose or tanning spray. (or really pink feet like me haha)

Gold wedge sandals used to remind me of the 70s weird disco shoes, but recently as I've come across designer brands, I've found the most sensational gold sandal wedges. They are sexy, sleek and so fun and flirty.

The best sandals are always the platform wedge sandals. So much drool just accumulated in my mouth now that I will have to devote a whole page to platforms. Suffice to say I love them (and you can tell by my many many platform boots and platform heels). If you wanna add funk and style to your shoe, try the platform wedges.
