You obviously landed on this page because you have great taste. Maybe you're thinking about maybe buying a new pair of shoes and trying to decide what style? High heel? Low heel? Sneaker? There are a hundred reasons I could give you that make wedge shoes what you want to buy; in the end, I'm going to give you one: they're incredibly comfortable.
Wedges are chosen because they are easier to wear. The support under the arch of the foot gives better balance to the person wearing the shoe. Rather than a stiletto heel which can be difficult to wear, the wedge heel doesn't sit as precariously on your foot.
An interesting story on the invention of the wedge and why it is as comfortable a shoe as possible:
The wedge shoe was invented (designed) by Ferragamo (the Italian shoe making legend) in the 1930s. At the time he was making and designing shoes by hand for women. What was so cool about Ferragamo, and why he's a legend, is that he studied anatomy in order to make better shoes. Shoes that were comfortable as well as beautiful was his ideal design. He started making shoes by hand and even as his company grew the quality and workmanship remained incredible. While many of his shoes were very funky, most were exquisitely beautiful. His unique ideas transformed shoes and with his invention of the wedge, women were walking taller without wobbling as much.
Not only was Ferragamo unique because he invented the wedge, but he also did something else unique when making his shoes. He was famous for his creative and inspirational designs. For instance, not only is he the creator of the wedge, he is the creator of the cork heel. He designed the cork heel as a response to the rationing of wood and other materials by Italy as the battles of WWII raged on.
So now you know why the wedge shoe is as comfortable, what you probably want to know is a slew of questions from: what do I wear with my wedges? to, Are there formal wedge shoes?
When it comes to the wedge shoe, there are so many choices you might be shocked. As I mentioned about a thousand times in my blog, there're platform and wedge sandals, but there are other styles (not judging by what's in my closet - which are strictly platforms - what can I say? I'm obsessed). Most people are familiar with the sandal, but the original wedge was a closed toe shoe. If you have a design in mind, there is a wedge shoe to fill the need.
There are many people who think the wedge isn't elegant enough for formal dresses, however, I believe they forget that wedge shoes were worn by the movies stars of the 30s 40s and 50s - a time when glamor was the mainstay of Hollywood.
Wedge shoes can very much be considered an elegant shoe, depending on the style chosen. There are a devoted set of wedding wedges you can find throughout the blog. Check the silver, gold or white wedge shoes for more information.
If you're looking for a casual wedge shoe, it won't be very difficult to find. Most shops have a large selection of espadrilles (cloth or canvas tops with woven or cork heels). If you're looking for an elegant wedge shoe, there are certain criteria that make wedges formal: no rubber or cork heels, satin or leather uppers, matching heels with the upper.
Black, white, leather, satin, closed toe, sandals, you can find them all in wedge styles. Wedge shoes have no style limits and you can find them all online, cheap.

white wede sandal I've worn out
There are two things I love most in this world, shoes and weddings. I'm not sure I could choose which is I love more. I often watched Sex and the City because I felt less odd when I saw there was an entire show where women were just as obsessed with shoes as I am. Seriously, this is me: Hello Lover Carrie Bradshaw
Most of my shoes are platforms, in fact 90% of them are platform boots and platform heels. I have many wedge sandals, wedge clogs etc. I've worn out the white wedge platforms you see pictured here. The black wedge sandals are another favorite of mine. I bought them both from various online stores, where I find a great deal of bargains. However, there are so many cute shoes, you can find thousands everywhere.
If you're in the UK, Faith wedding shoes has some seriously fantastic choices of platforms and wedge heels. So what qualifies as a wedge?
A wedge shoe is different from other heels because the heel exists in a large “wedge” from heel to toe. A traditional high heel or pump is

The triangle is the area of the shoes which forms the wedge shape
where the heel sits directly under the heel of the foot. (hence the name). The wedge, in comparison, sits under the heel and then follows the entire length of the foot to the toe. A platform wedge has the area from the ball of the foot to the toe raised up equal to or less than the heel height. A platform doesn't necessarily equal the heel size. You can have a heel of 2 inches and a platform of 1 inch or even less, A wedge that isn't a platform lays flat from the ball of the foot to the toe.
Here are some things to look for when shopping for a formal wedge shoe:
- Pay close attention to the heel. A leather covered heel is more formal than a wood or cork heel.
- Choose top materials in satins, leathers and beaded or rhinestone etc. Avoid cloth and canvas tops.
- Platform wedge shoes, though beautiful and fun, but there are very few that can pass muster as an elegant formal shoe.
